From February 3-8, 2008, Canada's Salt and Light Television Network was invited to spend a week filming several documentaries and programs on the campus of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. The invitation was extended to Salt and Light by the UST Department of Theology and Fr. Joseph Pilsner, C.S.B., chair of the department, organized the visit. In the middle of the week, on Ash Wednesday evening, February 6, 2008, Fr. Thomas Rosica delivered the inaugural Lenten Lecture “Words Made Flesh and Flesh Made Words: Towards a Spirituality of Communications in the Roman Catholic Church.”
A team of Salt and Light producers, editors and cameramen, led by Fr. Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., CEO of Salt and Light Television Network, worked closely with Fr. Pilsner, Basilian Scholastic Chris Valka, C.S.B., and UST students of theology and communications, to produce three episodes for the Salt and Light "WITNESS" series, "Catholic Focus", and "In Your Faith." The Salt and Light 2008 Easter Reflections were also filmed in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel at the Menil Collection near the UST campus.
The three WITNESS interviews led by Fr. Thomas Rosica featured Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, Dr. Robert Ivany, UST President, and Fr. Robert Crooker, C.S.B.
On Wednesday March 12, 2008, the concluding UST Lenten lecture featured “UST on Camera: A Campus Premier of Shows Filmed for Salt and Light Television at UST.” The evening consisted of the presentation of a 50-minute sampler of the Salt and Light programs filmed on the UST campus at the beginning of Lent. Introduced by Fr. Joseph Pilsner, CSB, Chair of Theology, UST students presented the film and the role of the television and broadcast media in the work of education and Evangelization.
Over the next few months, the full-length Salt and Light programs filmed on the UST campus will air on Canadian television and on several networks in the USA. Links to each of the individual programs will be made available to the Basilian and UST communities when the programs are edited. For now, enjoy the Salt and Light UST sampler to experience quality programming of depth, creativity and hope for the Church and for our Congregation.
