During the last week of May, the Holy See Mission conducted it’s annual Social Justice Seminar for college students. The week was coordinated with the help of our own Chris Valka and attended by 51 college students from across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Germany.
In addition to attending sessions at the United Nations, students heard from Archbishop Migliore, Permanent Observer to the UN; Archbishop Chaput of Denver; Honorable Douglas Roche, Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, Brother David Carroll; and various ambassadors to the UN. Each of these speakers spoke on a variety of topics including: diplomacy and the Holy See; the impact of Catholic Social Doctrine on UN activities; poverty and social development; world peace and security; global impact and human rights; Christian communities and peacekeeping; the Millennium Development Goals; trafficking and women’s issues; and terrorism and drugs.
Though the seminar itself last for only 6 days, the knowledge continues to build through a blog that is maintained by these college students. Bridges to Justice is a blog where the students post resources and ideas relevant to social justice and campus life. In addition to the individual posts, the blog also links to photos of activities and important links to Church documents.
All are encouraged to visit the blog from time to time and learn about the events that follow this unique seminar and gathering of students.
