The Basilian Crest

Basilian CrestThe Basilian crest was developed in the late nineteenth century.

The components are:

  • Basilian motto in Latin:
    bonitatem et disciplinam et scientiam doce me
  • Four quadrants and elements on a shield:
    • Chalice: The Sacrament
    • Open Book: Knowledge
    • Fleur-de-Lis and Circle of Rays: The Blessed Virgin, a patron of the Basilians as well as the origin of the Congregation in France
    • Cross: Christ and honors St. Basil’s Greek birth
    • Colours: Alternating red and green for the four quadrants: green representing life and red the blood of Christ.
