Basilian fathers missions

In 1961, after nearly thirty years of working among Mexican migrant workers south and west of Houston, TX, the Basilian Fathers took the next logical step – we went to Mexico. Answering the call of Pope John XXIII, who encouraged religious communities to send people to Latin America, the Basilian Fathers Missions began a process of taking over at poor parishes, building them up, and giving them over to local dioceses for continued ministry.

This has led to the formation of many relationships with educational institutions at the secondary and post-secondary levels. We have adapted ourselves to serve God’s people in many branches of education and research – especially in high schools, colleges, universities, graduate studies and publications – as well as in other forms of priestly work, particularly in parishes, campus ministry, and missions. 

There is one parish, however, where we have continued working for almost forty years: San Lorenzo (Saint Lawrence) in Tehuácan. We first started serving at San Lorenzo when it was The Chapel of Divino Salvador in 1978. In 1987 it became a parish, and the Basilian Fathers were entrusted with it. We have served there ever since.

The Basilians have been blessed with young Mexican vocations to the priesthood. These men begin their Basilian journey in the Novitiate in Tehuacán and then they move to the Basilian House of Studies (Scholasticate) in Mexico City to complete their university courses and their theological training.
